Getting Started as a Volunteer in Leigh Park

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding ways to contribute to your community, and the Leigh Park Initiative welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds and experience levels. Whether you have a few hours a month or can commit to regular shifts, there's likely a role that fits your life.

Many people assume volunteering requires specific qualifications or previous experience. In reality, we need people with diverse skills and perspectives. Some roles are practical—helping to organise events, maintain community spaces, or support activities. Others are social—mentoring young people, befriending isolated residents, or helping with administration and communication.

Why volunteer? Beyond the obvious benefit of helping others, volunteering offers genuine personal rewards. You'll develop new skills, meet like-minded people, build confidence, and gain a real sense of purpose. Many volunteers tell us that their involvement has enriched their lives in unexpected ways.

Our current volunteer opportunities include:

• Event planning and coordination
• Youth mentoring and activity support
• Environmental and grounds maintenance
• Administrative and office support
• Community befriending programmes
• Adult learning class assistants

The application process is straightforward. We ask prospective volunteers to complete a simple form so we understand your interests and availability. For most roles, we conduct a basic interview to match you with suitable opportunities. Some positions require DBS checks for safeguarding, which we arrange and fund.

We believe in supporting our volunteers properly. Everyone receives induction training relevant to their role, ongoing supervision and feedback, and access to training opportunities. We also provide refreshments at events and reimburse reasonable out-of-pocket expenses.

Time commitment is flexible. Some volunteers commit to a regular weekly slot; others help with specific events or projects. We understand that life circumstances change, so we're happy to adjust arrangements as needed.

Starting as a volunteer is simple. Visit the community hub, call us, or email expressing your interest. We'll discuss what you'd like to do, answer any questions, and find the right fit. Most volunteers are matched with a role within a few weeks.

Perhaps the most important thing to know is that you won't be alone. You'll be part of a team of dedicated people all working towards the same goal: making Leigh Park a better place. That sense of belonging and shared purpose is something many of our volunteers value most.
